Anwar says govt ready to strengthen laws against racial incitement

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government will not hesitate to amend and strengthen legal measures to tackle racial incitement.

(name)– He said the government had a duty to protect the country from small groups inciting violence, hatred and communal discord.

“If there are small factions inciting racial violence and hostility, we will not be swayed by the international media or foreign opinion. Our priority is to protect our beloved Malaysia.”

“If existing powers and resources are insufficient, we will amend and strengthen legal provisions and take necessary actions to ensure that our country remains secure and is recognized as an outstanding and respected nation regionally and globally,” he said in his 2024 National Day speech today.

The event was attended by about 7,000 guests including Cabinet Ministers, solidarity organisations such as Rukun Negara, Rukun Negara Secretariat members, Rukun Negara Clubs, civil servants, educators, student representatives, retired police officers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), private organisations and members of the public.

The theme of this year’s National Day celebrations is “Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka”.
