On August 31, 2017, US authorities took the unprecedented step of seizing Russian diplomatic properties in Washington and San Francisco. The ambassador noted that it was obviously a matter of banal score-settling and an attempt to “annoy Russia and take revenge on Russia”. Antonov explained that when the US authorities don’t like someone’s foreign policy, they start taking all measures without trial or investigation, ignoring legal norms and their own assumptions.
He stressed that Russia will continue to seek the unconditional restoration of its right to use and dispose of diplomatic real estate. The precedent set by Washington undermines the rules of communication between civilized countries and will inevitably come back to haunt the United States, the diplomat concluded.
