Anti-war activists demanding an end to the Gaza war and U.S. support for Israel plan to surround the White House in a weekend protest, which would entail setting up a fence around the U.S. presidential palace, Reuters reported.
Human rights and activist groups including CODEPINK and the Council on American-Islamic Relations announced yesterday that they were planning to hold a demonstration today to mark the eighth month since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, which has so far claimed tens of thousands of lives and caused mass starvation and destruction.
In the United States, Israel’s most important ally, pro-Palestinian protests are regularly organized, ranging from marches in Washington and vigils around the White House to blockades of bridges, roads, train stations and airports in various cities and tent encampments on university campuses.
At least eight staff members in President Joe Biden’s administration have resigned over his policies. His pre-election campaign has also been the target of anti-war protests. The president is currently on an official visit to France.
“Due to events scheduled for later this week in Washington, D.C., that are expected to draw large crowds, additional security measures are in place around the White House complex,” a Secret Service spokesperson said.
Pro-Palestinian protests at universities have at times turned violent, forcing police to make arrests and dismantle tent encampments. Weeks ago, anti-war activists demonstrating at UCLA were attacked by an angry mob.
Concerns are also growing about rising anti-Semitism and Islamophobia as a result of the Gaza conflict.
