A man accused of murdering a beloved English teacher and dumping her body in a wheelie bin has appeared in court – but how they knew each other remains a mystery.
Stephen Fleming, 45, of Coolaroo, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with the murder of 67-year-old Annette Brennan.
The suspected murderer, wearing green clothes and a bald half-ponytail hairstyle, sat quietly behind the protective glass in the prison dock for a brief case hearing.
The court heard it took Victorian detectives 20 weeks to prepare the summary of evidence against Fleming.
A prosecutor told Magistrate Louis Wildberg that police needed to analyze and reconstruct multiple crime scene and collect forensic evidence using computers and other technology related to the alleged crime.
Fleming’s attorney told the court her client has no custody administration issues to deal with while she awaits her next court date in January.
It is understood neither Ms Brennan’s family nor the defendant’s family were present for the hearing.
Annette Brennan, 67, was found dead at a rubbish dump in Epping last week, about 8 kilometres from her home in Coolaroo.

On Wednesday, police returned to Ms. Brennan’s residence and saw detectives entering her garage.
The detectives are Glenroy, IN Melbournenorthwest at about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday.
They believe Miss Brennan’s body was placed in a bin that was picked up from her home on Hilgay Street Last Tuesday, a garbage truck hit it.
Workers at a waste dump in nearby Epping discovered her body while removing green waste last Wednesday and contacted police.

Although police declined to say how the two knew each other, they told reporters she was not Fleming’s mother.
Simona Croce, one of Ms Brennan’s former students, told 9News the teacher was a “beautiful, lovely, kind woman”.

“No one deserves to be treated like this, no one,” she said.
Police are still conducting a major search for CCTV footage in the Coolaroo area.
Police attended the Coolaroo home on Monday and saw an officer cordoning off the house.
Detectives are also keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area at the time.
Police were able to arrest the woman through quick investigation and trace the route of her body from the dump to her home in Coolaroo.
On Saturday, police were seen collecting plant and shrub clippings from nearby properties, which are believed to match those found at the dump.
Police also investigated another brick house about 100 metres up the street and asked a locksmith to enter. Around 1pm.
It is understood detectives are keen to examine footage from the home’s CCTV cameras which could provide vital evidence in the ongoing investigation.
In areas where government housing is predominant, CCTV surveillance is not yet widespread, and police have again appealed to the public to come forward with any possible surveillance footage.
Police are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage from between Sunday, June 23 and Tuesday, July 2.

On Monday, a detective was spotted entering the house alone through the front door.
About 10 minutes later, he was seen closing an open window at the front of the house and leaving.
No one except a team of media representatives visited the property on Monday.
No one came to pay their respects, as has become the norm in other similar tragedies.
As of Wednesday, no one other than police officers appeared to have visited the property.
A neighbour told Daily Mail Australia that neighbours were still in shock after the suspected murder.
“We’ve never seen anything like this. It’s horrific,” the man said.

Her death resonated deeply with the community, with friends gathering in Point Cook, where she lived, to mourn her.
Ms Brennan is believed to be the 48th woman to be murdered in Australia this year.
