The debate over the government’s decision to spend $6.9 million to acquire 15 acres of land has died down. Last Friday, Nigel Petillo launched a protest that also involved union leaders and the opposition. That was five days ago, and public outcry has since died down, although Petillo promised a press conference sometime this week. However, it may be meaningless because Prime Minister Briceno said there will be no turning back on the land acquisition.

Belize Prime Minister John Briceño: “Honestly, guys, if we did that, we would still lose millions of dollars because the sale is closed. There is a contract, any lawyer worth their salt will tell you there is a contract. Unless the seller is willing to come back and say you know what I want, they will give me my money back even if we asked. So I think we’ve moved on. I think we’ve answered all of your questions. The technical staff has come in and explained why they prefer that position, so I have no further comment on that.”
The transfer of the 15-acre land was completed at the land department last Thursday.
