Austrian police detained two people on Wednesday in connection with a possible attack on a concert by American singer Taylor Swift in Vienna. This was announced by Franz Ruff, the Directorate General of Public Security at the Ministry of the Interior, at a press conference.
A 19-year-old man, an Austrian citizen, was detained in Ternitz, Lower Austria. As part of the intervention, some nursing homes and other properties were also evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Another man was detained in Vienna, his identity is still unknown. The portal oe24.at reported that he is 18 years old. Both men are said to be members of the same family from North Macedonia.
From the current investigation, they became radicalized under the influence of the Internet. According to the police, the young man detained in Ternitz recently pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terrorist organization. Chemical substances were found in his apartment and are being analyzed. He focused on the Vienna concerts of American singer Taylor Swift to be held at the Ernst Happel Stadium from August 8 to 10.
As a result, concertgoers will be subject to stricter security measures, including personal searches. Members of the WEGA and COBRA special teams will also be present.
