An explosion occurred outside a synagogue in southern France on Saturday morning in what police are treating as an attempted arson attack.

According to French media reports, a police officer injured in the explosion was taken to Montpellier University Hospital. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Occitan regional leader Carol Delga condemned the incident and said France would protect its Jewish population.
In a post on X, Delga thanked local police for “their calmness and professionalism”.
La Grande-Motte Mayor Stéphane Rossignol said surveillance cameras captured people setting fire to vehicles outside the synagogue, according to French newspaper Le Figaro.
The Council of Representatives of Jewish Institutions in France (CRIF) described the incident as “Attempt to kill Jews”.
Yonathan Arfi, Chairman of CRIF, wrote on X: “Gas tank explosion in a car in front of the Great Mert Synagogue at the time the worshippers were expected to arrive: this was not just an attack on a place of worship, it was an attempt to kill Jews”.
