Taihoro was damaged while being lifted back onto the stand by a crane after the team’s only match this morning on the opening day of the Louis Vuitton Cup Challenger Series.
The reigning America’s Cup champion quickly ruled out a return to action on day two of the double round-robin, where Team New Zealand would not be scoring points, and what the next steps would be with the extent of the damage already assessed and repairs underway.
“There was some structural damage to the stern but the main force was absorbed by the forward stand splash,” Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton said.
“Overnight, the area was removed (in other words, we cut the piece off the bottom of the hull) and restoration work has begun, which means building a new ship.
