The allegations sparked a manhunt for Kumar’s husband, but unexpectedly, Kumar reportedly told local authorities that she had no husband and tied herself to a tree.

Sindhudurg Police Commissioner Saurabh Agarwal told The BBC reported that Kumar told authorities she may have been hallucinating when she first made the statement and that she was not married.

Kumar also told police that she was distressed because her visa had expired and she was running out of money, so she bought a lock and chain and tied herself to a tree, the BBC reported.

Kumar is currently receiving treatment in a psychiatric hospital.

Sanghamitra Phule, director of the psychiatric hospital where Kumar is being treated, told the BBC that his condition was “improving”.

“She eats, walks, and exercises. She is receiving treatment and we are also giving her some nutritional supplements that her body is lacking.”

Phule said they had located Kumar’s family in the United States and spoke to them on the phone.

Kumar was found with her legs tied to a tree but her hands were not tied on July 27. Police said at the time that Kumar was too weak to remove the chains, so they sawed off the chains and rescued her.
