An American Airlines flight reportedly veered off the runway while landing at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston, Jamaica, late Thursday night.
Flight 850 was scheduled to arrive at 7:32pm, but was delayed by nearly two hours due to problems at Miami International Airport. When the plane finally landed at New Mexico International Airport, it made a hard landing and veered off the runway. While the extent of the damage is unclear, the plane’s engines and landing lights were said to be severely damaged.
Despite the accident, the plane still taxied to the gate under its own power and passengers disembarked smoothly. In response to the incident, American Airlines issued a statement on Friday morning to assure that there were no casualties.

The statement read: “American Airlines Flight 850 from Miami (MIA) to Kingston (KIN), Jamaica, briefly veered off the runway after landing. The aircraft taxied to the gate under its own power and passengers disembarked normally. Safety is our top priority and we apologize for what our passengers experienced.”

The flight was scheduled to return to Miami on Friday morning while waiting for a replacement aircraft to arrive.
This is the second such incident involving an American Airlines flight at Kingston Airport.
In December 2009, American Airlines Flight 331 ran off the runway while landing in Kingston. All 154 passengers and crew on board died, but the aircraft was severely damaged and had to be scrapped. The accident aircraft was an eight-year-old Boeing 737-800 aircraft with registration number N977AN.
