In an interview on Friday, Kamwendo said that in view of the current situation in the country, President Lazarus Chakwera has directed that the country will not hold celebrations this year but a national worship ceremony.

Kamwendo disclosed that the main activity during the ceremony would be prayers and that rehearsals had been completed under the leadership of the Chairman of the Committee of Ministers, Harry Mkandawire, and the Chairman of the Technical Committee, Defence Minister, James Chusiwa.

Kamwendo disclosed that all senior officials and clergy who will be participating in the event have already arrived in town, saying preparations are in place and everything is in place.

He said all clergy from the Southern, Central, Eastern and Central regions as well as clergy from parent churches such as the Association of Evangelicals of Malawi (AEM), the Malawi Conference of Bishops (ECM), the Malawi Council of Churches (MCC), Muslim and Rastafari communities and members of other faith groups would be present on the day.

He added that the event will feature performances by several choirs, including the Mitegeli Choir, the first choir of the New Apostolic Church to use the varin in its singing, and many other choirs.
