Aliff Aziz and Ruhainies have pleaded not guilty to the close proximity charges and will go on trial in October

On Wednesday (July 3), Singaporean singer and actor Aliff Aziz, 33, and Malaysian actress Ruhainies, 31, pleaded not guilty to charges of intimate contact. The two were detained by Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) officers at a condominium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on March 9.

Alif and Ruhainis were charged under Section 27(a) and Section 27(b) of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Federal Territories) Act 1997 respectively, which carry a maximum fine of RM3,000 (US$637) or jail term of not more than two years, or both, upon conviction.

Alif and Ruhainis spoke to the media outside the Federal Territory Syariah High Court in Kuala Lumpur, calling on the public to pray for a smooth process for the case. The two also responded to questions from reporters, clarifying that they arrived at the court separately and did not negotiate despite reports in some media about the matter.

Alief explained that he had been resting “mentally, emotionally and physically”.

“Even though I make mistakes, I’m still a human being. So I’m going to use this time to rest, spend time with my family… to make my family closer.”

When asked about her opinion of Aliff’s ex-wife Bella Astilah “Congratulations” on her “successful destruction of (Bella’s) marriage”Luhanis replied: “Because today [proximity] This case involves a separate issue, which I do not wish to enter into [Bella’s] case.”

The trial is due to resume in October and bail for Alif and Ruhainis has been extended.
