In two days, Sonelgaz recorded two historic peaks in electricity demand.
However, the national grid is in good condition and even energy exports to Tunisia have not been affected.
Public electricity and gas operators announced on Monday that consumption had hit a new all-time peak.
“After the severe heat wave that continues to hit many provinces of the country, Electricity Transmission and Systems Manager Sonelgaz has set a new high in demand for electrical energy for the second consecutive day”, said Sonelgaz in a press release published online on social networks.
Algeria’s electricity consumption hits record high, but exports to Tunisia remain
The operator noted that a peak occurred at 3:15 pm on Monday, July 15, reaching what it called a historical demand of 18,756 MW. That’s 24 megawatts more than the previous record recorded 24 hours earlier.
On Sunday, July 14, Sonelgaz announced a historic peak of 18,732 MW at 2:45 p.m.
Both peaks were recorded during the hottest part of the day, when air conditioning is in high demand.
Despite never-before-seen consumption levels, Sonelgaz is doing more than just meeting demand. It also continues to export electricity to neighboring Tunisia.
“Sonelgaz maintains the same level of exports to Tunisia despite record growth in local electricity demand,” the Algerian public group said in a press release on Sunday. On Monday, he reiterated that he would maintain “export operations to Tunisia.”
