In 1996, Jefferson Perez opened a previously impossible path for Ecuador: winning an Olympic medal for the country. Although officially he won a gold medal (1996) and a silver medal (2008), in reality there must have been two gold medals, because it turned out that the athlete who won the gold medal had taken performance-enhancing drugs when he won the silver medal.
After Ecuador’s performances at the London 2012 Olympics and the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics, Richard Carapaz, Nessi Dajomes and Tamara Salazar delighted us again at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where Ecuador did not appear in the medal table.
As of this writing, Ecuador has accumulated five medals (one gold, two silvers and two bronzes) for the 2024 Paris Olympics: two medals for Daniel Pintado, one with Glenda Morejón, one for Lucía Yépez, one for Angie Palacios and one for Neisi Dajomes.
The exploits of these sports heroes are immense. With no state support, many of them had childhoods filled with poverty and no facilities to pursue their activities, but they paved the way to glory with hard work, discipline, dedication and the belief that good must be done.
These outstanding athletes brought gold, silver and bronze medals to Ecuador, which is exactly the opposite of the general attitude in Ecuador.
The Ecuadorian people, deceived by populism, demagoguery and lies, want everything to be free, everything to be subsidized, no taxes on them and for the state to make all the needed investments.

With this attitude, our glorious athletes will not even receive a paper medal. Each of their stories should be mandatory reading in schools, so that children know that nothing is easy, that the road ahead as a country is long, that there are no magic solutions, only permanent, constant effort and hard work. Always sticking to the plans, the pre-conceived routes and the technical standards of each sport, you can reach the finish line, hear the national anthem and see the Ecuadorian flag raised on the Olympic podium.
None of these athletes had luxuries in their childhood, none of them had a car with a driver to go to training, none of them had financial incentives or subsidies. They only had the drive, inner strength, motivation and ambition to achieve their dreams.
Winning glory with medals and injustice
This should be the attitude of students, workers, businessmen, teachers, priests, politicians, civil servants, artists, doctors, every professional, every artisan, every worker; to do their duty and do good so that Ecuador can emerge stronger and one day escape the economic and social collapse that is overwhelming us.
We should neither applaud nor celebrate their attitudes and sacrifices if we are not willing to emulate them in our daily lives.

We Ecuadorians must always remember that life rewards effort, not excuses, which have a privileged place in our behavior and way of being. (profound)
