Caracas – The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) expressed on Saturday its solidarity with the Honduran government in the face of US “interference” in a bilateral treaty with the North American country, after the Central American country’s President Xiomara Castro terminated his extradition.
The member states of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our Americas – Peoples’ Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP) stand in solidarity with the people and government of the Republic of Honduras in the face of interference by the US government. In a statement published on X, the European Union wrote:
Likewise, he expressed support for Castro and actions he considered relevant to “defending his sovereignty.”
ALBA called on the international community to condemn “these blatant interventionist actions by any country, which aim to cause chaos in sister countries and destabilize the entire region.”
On Wednesday, President Siomara Castro abrogated the extradition treaty with the United States after Washington’s ambassador to Tegucigalpa, Laura Dogu, criticized the Honduran authorities for a recent meeting with Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Lopez.
Castro said on Thursday he would not allow the extradition treaty to be used to “intimidate or blackmail” the Honduran armed forces, following his decision to scrap the mechanism between Honduras and the United States for fear of it being used as a “political weapon against officials of his government.”
Meanwhile, the U.S. government urged Honduras to reconsider its decision to terminate the bilateral extradition treaty, which it said remains in effect.
On Friday, the Honduran National Defense and Security Council (CNDS) accused the United States of seeking to destabilize the Honduran government and expressed support for the president’s decision.
After the meeting of the Honduran National Security Council, Honduran Security Minister Gustavo Sanchez said, “In the face of attacks and threats from the US Embassy, we have cast a ‘vote of confidence and full support’ to Castro.” The United States “intends to undermine the stability of the country’s democratic institutions and violates the mandate of the Honduran people who democratically elected the President of the Republic.”
