After takeoff, Foran and Air New Zealand chair Dame Tracy Walsh hopped on a drinks cart with the cabin crew and walked from first class to economy, handing out drinks.
Neither Foran nor Walsh sat in first class, but in economy at the back of the plane.
“It just happened to work out,” Foran told media before his flight left Brisbane.
“It will add about two hours to people’s journeys, so they will arrive at Narita airport a few hours later than usual, and we just happen to have enough seats on the plane,” Foran said.
He said he received a text message from Luxon last night saying he would arrive in Tokyo around 8am this morning.
“(He’s) so grateful to Theresa and I for jumping in and doing what we do.
“The Air New Zealand team deserves credit for making the switch and acting accordingly,” Foran said.
