A 36-year-old man was killed and his wife and two children were injured in a car accident on Compact Road in Oikull, Airai Province on Wednesday afternoon, June 5, 2024.
Isaac El Belau II was travelling from Airai to Ngachesar with his wife and two children aged 2 and 5. According to a family member, their vehicle collided with a parked truck while trying to avoid another truck with a long bed carrying electric poles that was parked on the roadside.
The trucks were allegedly hired by a private company to install new utility poles on the east side of Babeltuapu town and not trucks of the Palau Public Utilities Corporation (PPUC).
Family members said there were no signs or warning signs warning of the construction site. Photos shared on social media by other motorists showed no signs or warning cones near the accident site.
However, Chief Ngiramengior, public information officer for the Palau Public Safety Bureau, disputed the claim and said there were road signs, flag bearers and staff at the scene.
Injured family members were taken to the hospital after the accident. El Bello II was pronounced dead around 2:25 p.m. His wife and children were taken to the hospital for overnight observation, authorities said.
The family reported that the 2-year-old child suffered a head injury and is being monitored for internal injuries. The mother suffered a broken left hand and has difficulty walking. Both mother and child were reportedly advised to seek further medical care outside of Palau.
Palauan youth El Bello Jr. returned to Palau with his family in 2021 and started his own business in 2023. He leaves behind a wife and four children.
