August 27, 2024 (New York) – The United Nations announced on Tuesday that 38 trucks carrying vital humanitarian aid have crossed from Chad into Sudan through the Adre border crossing, providing relief to more than 110,000 people.
The convoys passed through on Monday, delivering basic food and nutrition supplies, providing a lifeline to those affected by the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
“This is a positive development in the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where millions of people are in need of assistance,” a UN spokesman said.
The United Nations stressed that while this assistance represents progress, further assistance is urgently needed to reach all people affected by the conflict. The situation remains dire, with widespread displacement, food insecurity and a collapsed health system.
On August 21, 131 World Food Programme trucks arrived in Kerenik, West Darfur, carrying food for 13,000 people. This was the first batch of humanitarian aid entering the war-torn region through the Adre crossing in Chad, six months after it was closed.
