Prioritizing investments in agriculture in Ethiopia’s drylands
The Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) held a series of strategic meetings to agree on new approaches and priorities for international investment in agricultural research and development in Ethiopia’s drylands.
Four areas of greatest opportunity have been identified: strengthening pulse crop cultivation to improve human and environmental health; expanding cereal production by tapping the industrial potential of sorghum and other millets, including teff; strengthening watershed management to enable more intensive agriculture; and adopting new approaches to help farmers cope with climate change.
“These identified opportunities can only be seized through collaboration at all levels of the value chain and by ensuring that the conditions required for action are in place at every step along this vertical chain,” said Dr Fintahen Mengistu, Director General of the EIAR.
