CNNThe United States reached a historic milestone by advancing to the next stage of the Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup after their match against Ireland was abandoned on Friday due to a wet outfield, the International Cricket Council said.

On the eve of the game, it rained overnight in Lauderhill, Florida. Despite the best efforts of the grounds staff, the game could not be played and both teams ended up with only one point.

It was a big moment for the USA as the team had qualified for the Super 8s, a remarkable achievement considering this was their first T20 World Cup appearance.

The United States’ performance in the group stage so far has been one of the highlights of the tournament, as they beat a strong team Pakistan and narrowly beat India.

The United States, one of the co-hosts of the T20 World Cup, kicked off the campaign with a dominant win over Canada, finishing Group A with five points.

Pakistan was eliminated from the tournament due to the cancellation of Friday’s match.

The top two teams from each of the tournament’s four groups will advance to the Super 8s and be drawn into two further groups.

The four teams from both groups will compete in a round-robin format, with the top two advancing to the semifinals.

The Super 8s will begin on June 19, and all 12 matches of the second round of the T20 World Cup will be held on four Caribbean islands: Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia and St. Vincent.
