Tariffs imposed by the European Union to protect local automakers slowed the inflow of electric vehicles from China in July, according to Bloomberg.

The number of new electric vehicles registered in the EU by Chinese automakers such as BYD and SAIC MG fell 45% last month from June, according to a 16-member country study published by Dataforce in July. ”

The temporary tariffs, which took effect on July 5 and raised import duties to 48%, are aimed at protecting vital EU industries from Chinese competitors whose products are cheaper because they enjoy structural advantages from government subsidies in key areas such as battery technology.

“Beijing has threatened to retaliate in negotiations to resolve the issue,” the agency noted.

The tariff debate comes as global growth in electric vehicle sales slows, weighing on manufacturers in different regions.

EU policymakers are seeking to balance job protection with a goal of phasing out new fossil fuel cars by 2035.
