Two months after the controversial results of Chad’s presidential election, former Prime Minister and opposition figure Sussex Masra finally broke his silence. On July 19, he spoke live on social networks, expressing his concerns and demands about the current political situation in the country.
In his speech, Masra strongly questioned the results, which Mohamed Deby declared the winner. He compared the situation in Chad to that under apartheid South Africa, denouncing massive electoral fraud, manipulation and irregularities. According to him, despite evidence of corruption, international government officials have congratulated these results.
The election was held against the backdrop of allegations of fraud and growing political tensions. Masra’s criticism was based on allegations of violations of electoral law, particularly the refusal to provide candidates with result documents and a ban on filming polling station proceedings. He believes these practices undermine the credibility of the electoral body.
In order to restore confidence in the electoral system, Suseth Masra called for a complete restructuring of the institutions responsible for elections. He also called for a revision of the Electoral Law and an end to the new administrative divisions, which he said favored certain regions at the expense of more populous areas.
Masra ended his speech by calling for the release of about four dozen activists who have been jailed since the presidential election, a request that underscored the importance of civil rights and justice to his supporters.
Sussène Masra’s speech has reignited the debate over the transparency and fairness of Chad’s electoral process. His demands could lead to a profound reform of the country’s political system, but national and international support will be needed to achieve concrete changes.
