Netflix recently released the top 10 most-watched series worldwide between July 1 and 7, 2024. Among them, the Nigerian-produced “Oloture: The Journey” ranked sixth in the non-English series category.
Oloture: The Journey attracted 1,700,000 views during this period, confirming its global success. Produced in partnership with Nigerian studio EbonyLife, the series once again demonstrates the potential of African productions to attract international audiences.
This is not the first time that a Nigerian production has made it to international rankings. In August 2023, the film Jagun Jagun made it to the top ten of Netflix charts in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Libya. These consecutive successes highlight the talent and expertise of the Nigerian film industry.
International platforms such as Netflix have provided new opportunities for the export of African films and TV series. However, the limited number of distributors on the continent able to showcase these productions to global audiences remains a major challenge.
The disappearance of DISCOP Africa, a major African production showcase, has exacerbated this problem, making it crucial to find new means and platforms to promote African films and TV series internationally.
Despite the challenges, the success of Oloture: The Journey on Netflix is a powerful testament to the quality and potential of African productions. With better distribution and more opportunities for screening, the African film industry can continue to grow and shine on the global stage.
