The African Union (AU) made an urgent call for integration, peace and unity at its sixth semi-annual coordination meeting which opened in Accra, the capital of Ghana, on Sunday.

At the conference, themed “Education Fit for the 21st Century in Africa”, AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat stressed the importance of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), stressing that the AfCFTA must serve as a catalyst for the structural reforms necessary to improve economic governance, mobilize financing and strengthen human capital.

The meeting brings together AU members, Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and other stakeholders. Since its launch in 2017, this biennial gathering has become the main forum for coordinating the work of the AU and RECs and implementing the continental integration agenda. Despite these efforts, some parts of Africa continue to face conflict and violence that hinder development.

Mr. Faki called on African countries to maximize the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area as an engine of growth and economic diversification, which he said was essential to increasing intra-African trade and realizing the continent’s full economic potential.

Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recalled that ongoing conflicts threaten security and development in several parts of Africa and urged his African counterparts to work together to find lasting solutions to these challenges.

The AU meeting in Accra underlined the commitment of African leaders to promote integration and peace on the continent. The African Continental Free Trade Area is at the heart of these efforts as a strategic tool to transform economic structures and ensure sustainable growth in Africa.
