80 years ago, on August 15, 1944, the Provence landings marked a decisive turning point in France’s liberation from the Nazi yoke. These were Moroccans, Tunisians, Senegalese and others, who played a crucial, if often unrecognized, role in the victory over Nazi Germany.

In Tunisia, for example, the 4th Infantry Regiment, composed of many Tunisian soldiers, is particularly honored. These fighters, many of whom sacrificed their lives, were decorated for their bravery, notably by US President Harry Truman. The son of one of these heroes, Néjib El Abed, is now dedicated to perpetuating the memory of his father, Chief Warrant Officer Ahmed El Abed, through books and the preservation of medals.
