The Mauritius U19 team won five of the six medals.
Mauritius’s Batista team took most of the gold medals at the African Youth Championships held in Thies, Senegal this past week. Having already won the mixed team event, Mauritius also won four of the five gold medals on offer in the individual events, finishing the tournament with five gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals.
Mauritius captain Lucas Duce, who lost in the last men’s singles final, did not want to miss the chance to make up for his loss to Senegal this time. The U19 men’s singles top seed faced compatriot Aidan Shaw in the final and won convincingly in two sets (21-15, 21-8) to be crowned African Junior Champion and confirm his status as the favorite.

Aidan Siow and Lucas Douce (red) had strong performances in both singles and doubles.
Before the clash in the singles final, the two bad players had already won the gold medal in the men’s doubles final against the Algerian duo Ayoub Rayan Daoud/Oussama Khedou, which the Lucas Dus/Aidan Shaw duo won in two sets (21-12, 21-17).

How Hong sisters (left red) won the women’s doubles gold medal
If this victory brings Lucas Dus’ total number of gold medals to three, he does not intend to stop there, as he played his fourth mixed doubles final on the last day with Elsa Houhon. The Mauritian duo defeated the Egyptian pair of Mahmoud Mohamed Mahmoud and Fatma Rabie in straight sets (21-18, 21-16) to win the title.
Mauritius’ final gold medal came from the women’s doubles sister duo Chiara and Elsa How Hong. The second seeds of the table, the How Hong sisters, defeated the Egyptian duo Elgendy Hadia/Reem Hussien (4) in two sets (21-14, 21-16). Tiya Burthun/Layna Chinah won the bronze medal of the table. The other two bronze medals came from Aidan Siow/Chiara How Hong in mixed doubles and Chiara How Hong in women’s singles.
