The Aerospace Engineering degree once again tops the list of courses with the highest average admission scores, with only students with scores above 18 out of a list of 23 options able to enter.
The University of Porto’s Aerospace Engineering programme is the one with the highest access score in the first phase, according to data provided by the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MECI) on the day the results of the first phase of the national higher education admissions competition were announced.
There, the average score of the last students to enter was 19.45, having studied the same course at the University of Minho (19.14), Mathematics Applied to Economics and Management at the University of Lisbon (18.90), Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at the University of Porto (18.75) and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Lisbon (18.75).
These five courses are part of 23 courses where only students with an average score of 18 or above can enter, 6 more than last year, among which the University of Porto stands out with 11 courses with an average score of more than 18 points.
In addition to aerospace engineering and artificial intelligence and data science, this group of excellent programs includes options such as industrial engineering and management (18.63), architecture (18.60) and two combined medical master’s degrees (the Abell Institute of Biomedical Sciences at Salazar, with a value of 18.55) and the School of Medicine at Salazar, with a value of 18.48).
The final 21 programmes are the Information Technology and Computer Engineering courses at the University of Lisbon and the Economics course at the Nova University of Lisbon, where the lowest average score among students admitted in the first stage this year was 18.0.
In terms of fields, the medical course also performed well as in previous years, admitting 1,661 students, the highest number ever, owing to the increase in vacancies left by the special entrance examination for medical graduates.
After the two combined Master’s degrees taught by the University of Porto, which lead the “top”, it is followed by the University of Minho, where the candidates who entered last had an average score of 18.38, Aveiro (18.20), Coimbra (18.02), Lisboa Nova (17.93), Lisbon (17.77) and Beira Inland (17.70).
On the other hand, according to Lusa’s analysis, eight courses had negative average grades, almost all of which were taught in polytechnics and in regions with low population density.
The lowest average scores were in the Business Management course (after hours) in Beja, the Social Education course in Bragança, the Public Administration course in Castelo Branco and the Pharmacy course in Guarda.
Nearly 50,000 students were shortlisted for the first phase of the national higher education competition, an increase from last year, with a failure rate of only 14.3%.
The results of the first stage of the competition can be viewed on the website of the General Directorate of Higher Education (http://www.dges.gov.pt) from 00:00 on Sunday and students who wish to apply for the second stage can do so between Monday and September 4.
The approximately five thousand vacancies left over from the first phase will now be offered to the second phase, to which must be added those vacancies which were occupied but in which students did not enrol or register, and therefore become available again.
