Kuwait City, August 19: There is a new development in the online banking theft, with fraudsters sending text messages saying “your bank card has been deactivated.” A Bedouin fell victim to the scam and lost his entire bank balance of 4,784 dinars in a matter of minutes.

The prosecutor has classified the case as a felony and ordered an investigation. The police have assigned detectives to take necessary measures to arrest the criminal, who is likely a member of a network specializing in online bank theft.

According to the details of the case, a 41-year-old victim reported to the Al-Sulaibiya Investigation Department that he received a text message from a local mobile number. The text message read: “Your bank card has been disabled; please call ++++.” He believed the text message, called the number provided and reported that his bank card was malfunctioning. The caller asked him to provide his bank details to resolve the problem, which he provided. Soon after, he found that 4,784 dinars had been withdrawn from his account in 9 transactions.

The victim said he did not authorize the transactions and concluded his statement by noting that he did not know who had committed the theft. A formal criminal case has been opened.

A security source reiterated that people should not answer calls from individuals or groups posing as bank employees asking for updated data. The Ministry of Interior and banks do not contact customers by phone to ask for bank details or to update bank cards. In addition, Kuwaitis and expatriates are advised to avoid unreliable websites and suspicious links that could allow scammers to gain access to personal banking information.
