How a first-grader feels about school depends largely on whether he knows where he’s going, she said.
“Have you talked about it?” Most of the time, if the child has not had some kind of negative experience, they are not afraid. The child wants to know, the child is born to know, to learn, to experience. Most of the time, there is no such tension.
I always invite (future first-graders, students) to try out the bench, sit down and see how it feels among friends. Is it scary? I can say no. But of course, the feeling of excitement, of first-classness, is always there. Because it is a new experience, a new stage in life,” primary school teacher S. Belian told LNK News.
When asked why kids get nervous before first grade, she offered several possible reasons.
“I would say it probably depends a lot on the family’s circumstances. I understand the parents’ concerns, which are normal feelings we all have. But I urge you to trust and believe that you have done everything you can: choose the right school, talk to the teachers, discuss the school’s values. They have done that. Now the biggest task is to believe that your child can really do it.”
Children have strong feelings about whether they trust him or not. Therefore, we often talk about trusting children and strengthening them in our school, “assures the interviewer of LNK News.
Primary school teacher S. Belian said that motivation starts with the family and the children.
“First, parents have to work on themselves. When a child senses calmness from the parents, and they are calm and believe in him, usually the child will also be calm and know that he will succeed,” she asserted.
The main mistake, she believes, is that parents try to push their children.
“He has to know how to write letters and numbers. One of the main mistakes, in my opinion, is that before the child starts on the path of knowledge, we put the child into a certain framework for which he is not ready and perhaps not even willing. In this way he loses the joy of knowing.
Let’s look at each child individually and not compare them with others. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses,” said S. Belian.
The biggest challenge for first graders is to see themselves as part of a team and understand their own individuality. Primary teachers also stressed that the first few months of first grade are not just about spelling and math lessons.
“They should learn to get along with their community – the school community,” primary school teacher S. Belian told LNK News.
