“He was completely ataxic, couldn’t stand up, could barely stay awake. He was depressed, just dozing off… You couldn’t even wake him up,” Rob said.

“When I first met Kenny, I hadn’t even really seen him yet… I saw him and patted him, but I couldn’t even wake him up, he was completely gone. Can you imagine a dog you can’t wake up?
“He was definitely wearing a collar and there was a white spot on the bottom of his neck. He was definitely owned by someone, as to whether someone did something to him and then abandoned him, we don’t know… It’s horrible.”
Although Kenny came into the SPCA in extremely dire circumstances, Rob said he has made great progress in his recovery.
“He’s very obedient and I can imagine someone would be happy to do obedience training on him, you can teach him tricks and he responds positively to what you want to do.
“He’s silly, he’s eager to please, and he just wants to go out and play. He’s an active, driven, fun dog.”
Kenny is a stray dog and Rob said stray animals are the responsibility of the city council. The SPCA will only get involved in certain special circumstances.
“His welfare has been seriously affected, he needs treatment and the person who found him can’t drive him away. “If someone can’t drive and it’s a neurological problem or the dog can’t stand up… we would go and take it away but that’s the council’s responsibility for stray dogs.
“Kenny met our criteria of being injured and in poor health. He was in a very bad condition and someone was looking after him but couldn’t bring him in, so we helped him.”
Rob says Kenny is the perfect tool to remind pet owners to maintain a pest-free home.
“Let’s keep animals safe in our homes and not expose them to anything toxic. Close children’s drawers, pantries, and keep trash in bins. We need to microchip these animals and keep them safe.”
If anyone is interested in giving Kenny a permanent home, please go to SPCA Hamilton website.
The Hamilton SPCA cares for about 100 animals, 17 of which are dogs. Kenny is ready to put a twelfth dog up for adoption.
