Surinamese MP and former vice president Ashwin Ahim said he tried four times during the primary elections to put Jeanne Simons and Ramon Abrahams on one list so that the two would not have to compete against each other for the presidency of Suriname’s National Democratic Party (NDP).
Ultimately, the two NDP leaders rejected this, with Jenny Simons Elected as new chairman on Saturday night.
However, according to Ading, Abrahams is still the chairman of the Central Election Committee (CVC), which leads the Purple Party’s campaign, and has proven to be a campaign leader in the past. Therefore, he hopes that the two top candidates can still combine their strengths and move towards election victory.
“I have always said to combine the strengths of both. Auntie Jeanne is a good leader of the party and Mr. Ramon Abrahams is a strong leader. I tried in the preliminary stages to bring the two of them together and maybe come up with a list.
I was asked so I tried…twice, three times, four times, in fact. But the candidates said they still wanted to separate and do their own thing. Now the results are in,” Ading said on Culturu TV.
The election marks the end of Desi Bouterse’s presidency, which he led for many years. The New Democracy party’s board of directors has now named Bouterse as its honorary president.
Abrahams, who served as the Purple Party’s No. 2 for more than 24 years, told reporters after his loss that he did not expect this result. However, he said Simmons, as the newly elected chairman, must still ask him to continue as campaign manager. However, when asked whether he would do so, he would not say yet.
“I am still a member of the New Democracy party and I will remain purple. I will always vote for the New Democracy party,” said Abrahams, who was elected CVC president at a meeting of the Central Political Organisation (CPO) led by Bouterse last June.
Ahing, who was re-elected as one of the seven vice chairmen of the NDP and is also a member of the CVC, said he would fully support Simmons. In 2021, Bouterse’s radio station featured him Appointed as new chairman of the New Democratic Party (Video below.) Ultimately, nothing came of it.
For Simmons herself, it was no surprise that she won the civil war, as she had already shown some signs from the field. First and foremost, she will now work to ensure that the party’s programs and systems are in order so that the New Democratic Party can focus on power after 2025. She called on her colleagues in the party to work hard and win the election. Give citizens the confidence to return to politics
“Because of course you can’t make policy in opposition. So we are making policy so that when we join the board after the upcoming election, we will take fair governance and transparency seriously. And of course, the well-known social programs must also have. The New Democratic Party is in relatively good shape,” said the NDP chairman.
