August 15, 2024 (Khartoum) – Activists on Thursday accused Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of looting food supplies from collective kitchens and opening fire on volunteers in the Bari Shambat area of Khartoum, north of the capital.
The Rapid Security Forces have controlled the Shambat area and other areas of Bari in Khartoum since the early days of the war.
The statement from the Shambat Resistance Council said Rapid Rescue Team militants stole food supplies from collective kitchens in the Shambat region, known as Takaya, attacked volunteers and stole their mobile phones.
Funded by donations, Takaya prepares free meals every day for local residents who have lost their livelihoods due to the disruption of economic activities and jobs caused by the war. In Shambat alone, they provide meals to more than 1,400 families as the war continues to affect their lives.
The statement said that ceasing the provision of free kitchens would threaten the lives of residents who depend on them due to a lack of jobs and humanitarian aid.
The statement also said that the rumored force to protect civilians did not exist and had not been formed since the war began.
RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Daglo recently announced the formation of a special forces unit to protect civilians and help deliver aid.
The statement noted that the kitchens are the last remaining resource for besieged residents of Shambat and that the attacks on workers there exacerbate the humanitarian situation.
It further spoke of systematic attacks on residents, including beatings, searches and robberies.
The groups called on the Rapid Security Forces to respect international humanitarian law, stop interfering with food supplies and withdraw their armed elements from the area.
Authorities in the military-controlled areas blocked some supplies from entering areas controlled by the Khartoum Rapid Security Forces and imposed strict security measures, leading to a deterioration in living conditions for the remaining residents.
