Following allegations of personal misuse of the drug at national pharmacy stores, Acting Prime Minister Bradley Tovosia has called on health authorities to take immediate and strict measures to prevent misuse of the drug.
He also asked the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to step up investigations into allegations of abuse to ensure those involved stop such behavior.
Tovosia convened a meeting this week with senior officials from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) to discuss concerns about alleged misuse of drugs leading to shortages in rural clinics and health centres in the country.
He said the Government of National Unity and Transition (GNUT) was very concerned about the alleged shortage of medicines and he called on the relevant departments to urgently address the problem.
Urgent measures discussed with health authorities include increasing the budget for medicines and drugs, setting up structures at national drug stores and mobilizing staff to track the leakage and distribution of drugs from drug stores to hospitals and clinics across the country.
“These measures must be implemented immediately to ensure that medicines and medical supplies are strictly stored and distributed,” Tovosia said.
He said the measures were critical to identifying gaps in the storage, inventory and management of medicines and medical supplies.
Police Commissioner Mostyn told the meeting that police had received complaints and had appointed an investigation team to look into the areas.
National Drug Store Manager Wesley Kukutu confirmed that there are shortages of medicines due to limited budget allocation for medicines and medical supplies due to population growth and an increase in diseases.
He said increasing the budget for medicines and medical supplies would ease the shortages.
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Referral Hospital, Dr George Malefuasi, said they have put in place stringent measures to address the loopholes and leaks found in the stock management and pharmacy departments.
