Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said she will not sell out Bangladesh’s interests by exporting imported Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to Tripura, India. He said Bangladesh will export LPG, not natural gas. There is no room for any misunderstanding about this. Sheikh Hasina said we will import LPG from abroad, process it and export it to India. It is not natural gas. He also assured that no export decision will be taken without knowing the actual reserves of natural gas in the country. The prime minister said Bangladesh does not produce LPG and has to import it from abroad. LPG is obtained as a by-product during the extraction of natural gas. The gas we supply in Tripura is imported LPG, bottled natural gas. It is just like other products we export. There is no doubt about it. With the export of natural gas, another dimension has been added to our export sector. The prime minister said those who are openly opposing, namely BNP Paribas, want to remind them of 2001. The United States asked to sell gas and I said to sell it after meeting the needs of the country. That is why we could not come to power in 2001. Those who sell gas say they came to power with a promise of gas. We are sitting in Jimmy Carter’s house, the Prime Minister said.
There was an agreement between them. Bill Clinton came and he also offered to sell me petrol. I was invited to the US. I said the same thing there. I said then that BNP cannot supply gas. Because we don’t have that much petrol. They sent people to investigate. He said Bangladesh is floating on gas. When I asked them carefully, they could not give a correct answer. Sheikh Hasina said those who remember that Tripura was the base of our great liberation war in 1971. The war was fought from there. They provided shelter and food to the people of our country then. Tripura is our advantage. The Prime Minister said that our country does not produce LPG. We are importing it. I supply cooking cylinders. Earlier, we used to produce LPG in small quantities. Several companies are supplying imported gas to the village. Earlier, a 10 kg cylinder was sold for Tk 1,600. Now it is Rs 900 due to the opening of the market. There are 26 authorized companies working on it.
