televisionThe legal troubles of defendant Jerone Omar Waterman intensified when he was summoned to court on Friday on fraud charges.
When the 35-year-old, of Combermere Street, St Michael, was called to the dock, Magistrate Alison Burke was told that not only had he failed to appear in the A District Magistrates Court in relation to the pending case, he had also absconded from the High Court.
Wortman faces a new charge that he wrote a cheque in his name on August 21 from Republic Bank (Barbados) Limited for $7,080, drawn on the account of CASHWIZ (BRB) Limited, knowing that the cheque was forged.
He was also accused of attempting to withdraw cash from a bank using forged cheques. As these charges were indictable offences, he was unable to plead in the Magistrates’ Court.
Prosecutor Ralph Rollock opposed bail for the accused because he had “repeatedly” failed to appear in lower courts and a warrant had been issued for his arrest by the High Court.
The defendant claimed that the High Court judge gave him time to find a surety, but “I have not been able to find one. But I have found one now. I am here now and I want to get out of this situation. I have sureties now and I am willing to appear in court any time. It is up to you.”
The magistrate explained that if the court had granted him time in good faith, he had been in breach.
In his bail application, he vowed that avoiding court “would not happen again”.
But Wortman’s bail application was refused and he was remanded in custody to appear in Burke again on September 20. On September 28, he will appear before the First District “A” Magistrates’ Office, having previously failed to appear in court several times. He was also produced in the High Court on Friday on a warrant for his arrest.
