ABU CON-FEST 2024, a unique platform that brought together producers from around the world to share experiences and discuss impactful content creation, concluded successfully with participation from public broadcasters worldwide.
The event kicked off on July 2 with a humorous keynote speech by Khairy Jamaluddin, who regaled the audience with his journey from sacked politician to Malaysia’s top podcaster. The opening ceremony was followed by a series of sessions such as a speech on the ABU Awards Winners’ Circle, a panel discussion on content production and distribution in the Asia-Pacific region moderated by Dato’ Kamil Othman, Chairman of the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS), and a dynamic “60” Pitch session, where public broadcasters pitched their shows within a strict time limit.
The second day of discussion focused on radio and its dynamic evolution. Moderated by Kartini Ariffin, the day featured a lively panel discussion on the theme “R/Audio – The Next Century” featuring leading figures from Radio Television Malaysia (RTM), Radio Republic Indonesia (RRI), Media Prima Audio and TRT Turkiye. The discussion highlighted the need for radio to adapt to technological advancements while retaining the human touch and personality of a real-life DJ. Other sessions included a discussion on the power of local radio and the exciting content of Radiodays Europe and Radiodays North America, moderated by Nessa McGann, Media Consultant at Radiodays Europe in Ireland.
Day three was centered around digital content, with a keynote by Thi Uyen Nguyen of Nhan Dan Newspaper. She showcased innovations in Vietnamese print newspapers, highlighting the Panorama edition, a unique 9-meter-high print commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. The edition included QR codes and AR scanning for interactive content, and was translated into six languages, becoming a global sensation. Despite the challenges of print media, this edition demonstrated its potential for monetization and popularization.
In addition to the above sessions, there are also many masterclasses on various aspects of content production.
ABU CON-FEST 2024 combines ABU’s signature content events: ABU TV-CON, ABU RadioSonic and #ABUdigital. The event brings together producers to share experiences and discuss how to create impactful content. This year’s sponsors include RCS Sound Software, Media Prima, Tourism Malaysia and RT.
