Trump posted on social media late Sunday questioning whether he should debate Democratic candidate Harris considered the situation the former president suggested would create a hostile environment.

“After watching the ‘Fake News’ on ABC this morning, including lightweight reporter Jonathan Carl’s (K?) ridiculous and biased interview with (Arkansas Sen.) Tom Cotton (Fantastic!), and their so-called ‘Panel of Trump Haters,’ I asked myself, why would I want to debate Kamala Harris on that network?” Trump wrote in his Truth Social post on Sunday.

“Will panelist Donna Brazile ask the Marxist candidate the same questions she did to Crooked Hillary Clinton? Will Kamala’s best friend, the head of ABC, do the same? Where is George Slopadopolas Jr. hanging out now? Will he be involved? They have lots of questions to answer!!! Why is Harris turning down Fox, NBC, CBS and even CNN? Stay tuned!!!” Trump wrote.

On Monday morning, Trump told NBC News that ABC was the “most unfair network” and that “I think ABC should really be shut out,” adding that he would rather do the debate on other networks.

CNBC has requested comment from ABC.

The startling suggestion came amid reports of a dispute among the ABC’s campaign staff over whether the ABC should keep the candidates’ microphones on throughout the debate, so that any comments made by a candidate would be recorded when it was their opponent’s turn to speak.

NBC News confirmed that Harris’ campaign wanted the hot mic, but Trump’s campaign did not. Politico.

Still, the debate was a disaster for Biden, whose hesitant performance and confusing answers effectively doomed his reelection hopes. Less than a month later, Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Harris.

The vice president, a former prosecutor, may benefit from a format that allows her to rebut Trump on the fly rather than waiting for her turn to speak.

Brian Fallon, a spokesman for the Harris campaign, said in a statement, “We have told ABC and the other networks seeking to host the October debate that we believe both candidates’ microphones should remain live throughout the broadcast.”

“Our understanding is that Trump aides prefer to have the microphones muted because they don’t think their candidate can play the role of president for 90 minutes on his own,” Fallon told NBC.

Trump frequently interrupts his opponents during debates, such as during his 2016 showdown with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. “What a mean woman,” he complained as Clinton answered a question.

“We doubt Trump’s team even told their boss about the altercation because it would have been too embarrassing for them to admit they thought Trump couldn’t handle Vice President Harris without a mute button,” Fallon said. “The vice president is ready to deal with Trump’s constant lies and interruptions in real time. Trump shouldn’t have to hide behind the mute button anymore.”

Jason Miller, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, said in a statement that Trump accepted the “exactly the same terms” for the ABC debate as the Republican’s debate with Biden on CNN.

“The Harris campaign requested a debate with notes and opening statements after agreeing to CNN’s rules,” Miller said. “We said we would not change the agreed-upon rules. If Kamala Harris isn’t smart enough to repeat the message points her handlers want her to remember, that’s their problem. This seems to be a pattern from the Harris campaign.”

“They’re not allowing Harris to do interviews, they’re not allowing her to do press conferences, and now they want to give her a debate cheat sheet,” Miller said. “I guess they’re looking for a way to get out of any debate with President Trump.”

Trump told NBC News Monday morning that “it doesn’t matter to me” whether the microphone was hot during the debate.

“I would probably prefer it to continue, but the agreement is that it will be the same as last time,” Trump said.

Fallon denied that Harris’ campaign had called for a sit-down debate where notes would be allowed.
