New Delhi: A workshop on startup entrepreneurship was organized at Atal Incubation Centre (AIC) – BARC, DAE Convention Centre, Anushaktinagar, Mumbai, 400094 on Friday, March 10, 2023. AIC-BARC was established under the ambit of Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) of NITI Aayog to create an ecosystem for startups based on spin-out technologies of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). AIC-BARC started operations on December 22, 2022, with the signing of an agreement for incubation of spin-out technologies of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).
Four major industries.

AIC-BARC was established in line with the ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’ campaign announced by the Prime Minister and the subsequent reforms in the atomic energy sector announced by the Finance Minister on May 17, 2020. AIC-BARC is one of the first technology development-cum-incubation centres set up by DAE to promote synergy between government research institutes and technology entrepreneurs.

Invited to the event are graduating students and students completing undergraduate studies in science/engineering/commerce.

The invitation to the seminar received an overwhelming response and about 150 people attended the seminar. In the seminar, two technologies, SHESHA (for wet waste management) and Rapid Biocomposting (for dry waste management) were introduced by BARC’s field science experts and their business models were presented. Working model demonstrations of SHESHA and Rapid Biocomposting plants were arranged for the participants in Anushakti nagar and nearby areas. These technologies are intended to

Clean India campaign of the Indian government. In addition, waste is being converted into wealth through products generated from garbage which return to nature, ensuring continuation of biogeochemical cycles and replenishing the soil
Contains important nutrients.

SHESHA is a new compact spiral waste digester designed to manage biodegradable waste generated by small residential complexes, restaurants, etc. in situ, thereby enabling decentralized treatment of biodegradable waste. The system has great potential to process waste as well as produce high-quality fuel and fertilizer for soil applications. The name Shesha is based on the serpentine shape of the digester (resembling the snake Shesha) and the Sanskrit name for waste.

The rapid composting technique is based on the cellulose decomposing fungi, Trichoderma, isolated from tree bark. It is safe for both environmental and human handling. The formula is able to compost kitchen waste, agricultural waste, garden waste (dry leaves including coconut leaves) and temple waste. This method is completely aerobic and has no bad odor, making it more socially desirable.

The workshop ended with a very lively and interactive feedback session, wherein aspiring entrepreneurs interacted with a panel of experts from BARC, and the success of the workshop bodes well for the launch of some successful start-ups in the coming years.
