Peep Pitk, development manager at Fibenol, a manufacturer of green asphalt components that entered the national highway last week, believes that Estonia can become a pioneer in legislating sustainable solutions and lead the world in innovating regulations.
“We can choose whether to be the provider of new technologies and solutions or to wait for the solutions to arrive in our hands and then start implementing them,” Pittke explained on the green technology show “Cleantech.” He believes that public procurement is a way to create space for innovation.
Pitki said Estonia currently has the opportunity to become a leader in regulatory innovation. “The fossil-based regulation is based on what we have been optimizing for a hundred years. It is actually a very strong market barrier. Estonia has to adopt solutions from the market sector by sector and set realistic targets for the solutions. No one has to dictate what the solution is, but we start from the fact that you have a transparent supply chain and you have a calculated and verified CO2 footprint.”
In the first part of the green technology and innovation show “Cleantech” on äripää Radio, we discussed the current situation of green technology accelerators in Estonia. Jana Budkovskaja, CEO of Beamline, explained what the opportunities and challenges are and how much funding and effort is needed to accelerate green innovation.
In the second part of the show we talk about how to accelerate better. For the first time, the Estonian Transport Board is testing an asphalt mix on the national highways, where the binder (bitumen extracted from petroleum) has been replaced by up to 15% lignin (a binder found in wood and produced in Estonia). Fibenol. What else Fibenol is involved in besides lignin production and what are the plans for the future, says Peep Pitk, Development Manager at Fibenol.
You can learn more about regulations, biochemistry and the future of accelerators in Estonia at the show. The host is Matt Varner.
