A unique park is planned on the outskirts of Panevėžys, which was converted into a heavy metal warehouse during the Soviet era and is now known as the Molenay Filtration Site.

It is being considered that its path could rise above soils contaminated with cadmium, zinc and nickel, and the information provided on the stand indicates and threatens reckless and catastrophic damage to nature. The Panevěž Municipality is preparing to search for architects who can suggest how to turn the former contaminated area, which is currently being revitalized, into a tourist attraction.

In order to make the 62 hectares of tree-planted filtration fields in Moraine no longer needed by anyone, it aims to civilize some of them in some way.

One idea is to build an educational trail through the area.

“We plan to announce an architectural competition. We will wait for experts to provide suggestions on how to turn the Molani Filtration Site into an interesting, visitable and even unique place,” said Saulius Glinskis, head of the municipality’s land planning and architecture department.

He said those who walk through these heavy metal contaminated fields on the constructed roads will be able to understand the destruction of nature while also learning an ecological approach.

It is estimated that the cost of installing such a road would be around 3.7 million euros.
