A new era of cooperation between French Polynesia and Japan

French Polynesian President Moetai Brotherson met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida following the PALM 10 Forum in Tokyo on Thursday, July 18. The bilateral meeting marked a key step in strengthening relations between the two regions.

The discussion started with the partnership between pearls and the tourism industry. The Tahiti Black Pearl, popular in Japan, and the direct flights between Tahiti and Tokyo were at the center of the exchange. A study is currently underway to optimize this service and adapt the services provided to tourists to changes in Japanese society.

A highlight of the meeting was the exploration of aquaculture projects. The two leaders discussed collaboration with Japanese universities, including Kendai, to share knowledge and train Polynesians in innovative techniques to improve aquaculture practices in Polynesia.

The country’s president also expressed his interest in new technologies and animation training, considering a partnership with the Tokyo University of Art and Design. These collaborations could open up new opportunities for young Polynesian talent, especially in the fields of digital creation and animation.

Renewable energy was a key theme in this interview. The discussion focused on innovative projects, especially in the field of hydrogen and ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC). These initiatives aim to promote sustainable energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels and polluting batteries.

Both countries have a heavy nuclear legacy, with Japan having suffered nuclear explosions and Polynesia having suffered 193 nuclear tests. The two sides also discussed a major issue of common concern to both countries – the discharge of treated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, and stressed the importance of continued dialogue. Finally, the leaders of both sides explored the possibility of cooperation in the fields of catering, hotels, and health.

This meeting symbolizes a new era of cooperation between French Polynesia and Japan, paving the way for innovative and beneficial projects for both parties.
