Tegucigalpa– This Thursday afternoon, a low-magnitude earthquake of magnitude 2.9 occurred 8.09 kilometers east of the city of Comayaguarajas in central Honduras, with a focal depth of 5 kilometers.
The seismic activity was recorded along the Central Depression fault system in Honduras at 1:23 p.m.
The government reported that firefighters in Comayagua and Yoro departments monitoring after the earthquake did not report activity in surrounding locations.
At the end of 2023, the National Center for Atmospheric, Oceanic and Seismic Research (Cenaos) of the Permanent Emergency Committee (Copeco) reported that more than 100 earthquakes occurred in the Comayagua department in one month.
At the time, seismologist Jorge Aguilar explained that the so-called Central Depression had always had seismic activity.
According to experts, there have been records of seismic activity in the area since 1800, with ground movements exceeding 5 degrees, such as the one that occurred a month ago.
