Floods cause material damage and human casualties in Bamako and surrounding areas. The heavy rains on Saturday, August 17, 2024, claimed many victims in the Missabougou area, especially in the VI commune in the Bamako region.
Homes collapsed, families stranded and rooms still filled with water are what the people of Misabugou have been experiencing since heavy rains hit the capital over the weekend. In this community we visited on Monday, August 19, the damage was still visible.
“Every year we go through the same thing, but nothing has improved. Our rooms are flooded, our administrative documents are destroyed, we have lost everything, and we don’t know how to get it back,” insists one anonymous resident. He’s not the only one.
“Every year we go through the same situation, water entering our home. Our walls are collapsing. The rain on Friday caused a lot of damage. We are building a ditch to drain the water when it rains. This time, we had to sleep in a private school because there was water everywhere,” another victim, Djenéba Tangara, also testified.
Sadio Diakité, another resident of Missabugú, said the rains destroyed eight houses and an outdoor kitchen and caused extensive damage to the neighborhood.
Mother Nayan Koné said she was surprised to hear the sound of water waves crashing against her compound and the walls collapsing as she sat in her house. With no way to escape, she and her children were rescued from the roof of a neighboring family. “Our wall has collapsed and we need assistance. It’s like this every time it rains. We sleep on a family’s roof. Apart from that, we don’t get any help,” she lamented.
Some of these families are being hosted by neighbours or schools. Some non-governmental organisations have opened jars to collect as much clothing and money as possible to help the victims. A census team from the National Social Development Agency went to the scene on Monday to identify the victims. There were 24 flood collapse incidents in the Bamako region, affecting 4,150 families and 32,068 people in total.
