Police officers patrol a bridge over the Seine River in Paris, France, ahead of the Summer Olympics, Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

A total of 23 people were in shock and received medical treatment. Agence France-Presse reported that the police had arrived at the scene. According to the police, the accident was initially a traffic accident and the driver did not hit anyone intentionally.

At around 19:30, two people in a car ran onto the terrace of a bar on Père Lachaise Street in the 20th arrondissement of Paris. Police sources told Le Parisien that they were apparently drinking and under the influence of drugs. The driver fled and the passenger was arrested by police, the newspaper added. Le Figaro wrote that the driver was drunk when the accident occurred.

A waiter at a store about 200 meters from the accident site told AFP that the car was traveling at high speed in the opposite direction, and then he heard a loud bang. According to him, people fled in all directions, two women helped the injured, and the police arrived soon. “They were colleagues, neighbors, people I knew. It’s a quiet street, nothing happened,” the waiter said.

Four fire engines and several soldiers from the Sentinel program, which patrols French streets to prevent acts of terrorism, arrived at the scene. Security is a growing concern across the country as the Summer Olympics open in Paris on July 26. There will be 35,000 police and gendarmes on the streets during the games.
