The booklet contains practical recommendations for policy makers to create an enabling environment for all food security stakeholders in Mauritius.
The booklet “Enhancing Food Security in Mauritius: Advancing Crop and Livestock Production” was launched last week at the Robert Antoine Building of the Mauritius Sugarcane Industry Authority in Redoute. On the occasion, the new website of the Mauritius Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) was also unveiled, with the presence of Mahen Seeruttun, Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, and Dr. Salem Samtali, President of MAST, and other guests.
In his speech, the Minister highlighted the recommendations in the booklet aimed at strengthening food security in Mauritius. These recommendations include increasing local agricultural production through optimized seeds, fertile soil and adoption of advanced agricultural practices. Mahen Seeruttun stressed the need to integrate technology and mechanization to overcome challenges related to labor shortages and climatic conditions while reducing production costs.
Dr Samutali spoke of Mauritius’s reliance on food imports, which makes the country vulnerable to price fluctuations and international conflicts. “The country faces major challenges such as climate change, scarcity of agricultural land and lack of water for irrigation, which exacerbate food security issues”he announced? He encouraged young people to take up farming using modern technology to optimize resources and increase productivity. Dr. Saumtally also advocated for sustainable farming methods to protect soil health.
