A 70-year-old Ugandan woman gave birth to twins after fertility treatment, making her one of the oldest mothers in the world, reports Arthur Matsiko, a spokesman for the Women’s Hospital in New York Post. A boy and a girl were delivered by caesarean section on Wednesday after artificial insemination treatment in the capital, Kampala. He explained that the mother is in good health, noting that Namukwaya gave birth to a baby girl in the same hospital in 2020 when she was in her 60s. Doctors explained that the mother, who is in her 70s, was able to walk around the hospital two or three days after giving birth to the twins.

Dr. Edward Tamale Sali said in a media statement that Namukwaya “gave birth to the twins using eggs and sperm donated by her partner,” calling it a “remarkable achievement.” The twins were born prematurely at the 31st week of pregnancy and were placed in an incubator, but doctors confirmed they were in good health. The happy mother said: “I should be in my seventies and weak, unable to conceive and have children, but a miracle happened and I gave birth to twins.”

Before she gave birth to her first child about three years ago, Namukwaya said people in her village often used the word “cursed” to describe her because she had suffered multiple miscarriages. Regarding her husband’s attitude after giving birth to twins, she replied: “Men don’t like to be told that their wives are pregnant with more than one child. He has not visited me since I was admitted to the hospital.” This is not the first time that an elderly woman has given birth. In 2019, a 73-year-old woman in southern India gave birth to twins with the help of artificial insemination technology.
