Dr. Edward Tamale Sali said in a media statement that Namukwaya “gave birth to the twins using eggs and sperm donated by her partner,” calling it a “remarkable achievement.” The twins were born prematurely at the 31st week of pregnancy and were placed in an incubator, but doctors confirmed they were in good health. The happy mother said: “I should be in my seventies and weak, unable to conceive and have children, but a miracle happened and I gave birth to twins.”
Before she gave birth to her first child about three years ago, Namukwaya said people in her village often used the word “cursed” to describe her because she had suffered multiple miscarriages. Regarding her husband’s attitude after giving birth to twins, she replied: “Men don’t like to be told that their wives are pregnant with more than one child. He has not visited me since I was admitted to the hospital.” This is not the first time that an elderly woman has given birth. In 2019, a 73-year-old woman in southern India gave birth to twins with the help of artificial insemination technology.
