On the morning of May 2, 2024, a woman contacted the Tafuna Police Department to report that her neighbor had attacked a man who was hunting his pheasants.
According to police records, the police were said to have gone to the place where the accident occurred in Tafuna and the neighbours of the victim of this accident contacted the police station.
Police also called emergency services as the victim’s legs were injured in the accident.
The woman explained that she called the police station and she said that she was at home when she heard someone screaming. He saw the defendant’s wife and an elderly woman dragging the defendant (Elia Autagavaia) towards their home. But at this time, Autagavaia was shouting at the victim because he had done something painful to him.
When emergency services arrived, the victim was taken to hospital for treatment, but by then police had located Autagavaia and took him to the police station.
The victim explained that he was mowing the grass in front of his home at the headquarters of Bethel Church in Tafuna when the accused came over and asked him why he was not mowing the grass in front of his (Autagavaia) home. The victim replied that it was his (Autagavaia) job to do.
The victim’s reaction disturbed Otagavay and he started making threatening gestures. The victim also stated that when he tried to take off his work shoes (boots), he was surprised that Otagavay punched and kicked him and knocked him down, resulting in his leg being broken.
The victim also said the defendant continued to hit her in the face until her daughter and a man stopped her.
When interviewing Autagavaia at the police station, he said he saw the victim mowing the church’s land, but he did not mow his (Autagavaia’s) land. That’s why he went to ask the victim why his (Autagavaia’s) land was not mowed. But the victim replied that it was a job he (Autagavaia) had to do and the chickens were his land.
Autagavaia confirmed that he made a deal with the victim, but nothing happened and he returned to his home. However, the victim ran over and punched him (Autagavaia), but his punches missed. Autagavaia said the victim continued to beat him until he fell. At this point, he (Autagavaia) confronted and stabbed the victim until his daughter pulled him away and walked towards their home.
Autagavaia also confirmed that he sent threatening messages to the victim.
Autagavaia was charged with three counts:
Count 1: Public Disturbance – a Class ‘B’ Misdemeanor, punishable by up to 6 months in prison, or a $500 fine; or both.
Count 2: Assault in the Third Degree – a Class “C” Misdemeanor punishable by up to fifteen (15) days in jail, or a $300 fine; or both.
Count 3: Assault in the Third Degree – a Class “A” Misdemeanor punishable by up to one (1) year in prison, or a $1,000 fine; or both.
The defendant will be held on $1,000 bail pending trial.
