On the morning of June 25, 2024, Mr. Nauru Tia contacted the Tafuna Police Station to report that his brother Gavin Tia was causing chaos at home and destroying the furniture in the house with a baseball bat.
According to government records, security agents were talking to Nauru and his mother at a neighbor’s home when they arrived.
The mother told police what happened and pointed them to the perpetrator, but this time Gavin was standing outside the house with a baseball bat.
Nauru also showed police photos of Gavin’s damaged property, including the house and car.
The damage included the door of the house on Nauru, a hole in the living room wall of the house and a hole in the body of the car. Although the estimated amount of property damage has not yet been determined, it is estimated to be more than $300.
The car Gavin vandalized belonged to his mother and her husband.
The police then approached and ordered Gavin to drop the baseball bat, and the man threw it down. The police detained him and took him back to the police station for further investigation.
According to a statement from Nauru, the accused’s brother was still very young and wanted to bring money to a man he used to joke with when his mother refused to give him money.
Nauru explained that the defendant’s brother was angry and he yelled and cursed at his mother, then walked to Nauru’s bedroom and kicked the bedroom door, which was bad. Then the defendant grabbed a baseball bat and began to destroy the interior of the house.
Out of fear for his mother, Nauru grabbed her hand and led her out of the house.
The defendant then called his brother and said he would kill him if he saw him again, while Nauru and his mother went to the border to alert the police.
According to the victim’s mother, they were having morning tea when the defendant asked her for money to give to the man they were drinking ice cream (drugs) with. But when the mother replied “no”, the defendant started making loud noises and began to damage property in the house. The mother said that the defendant damaged the house with a baseball bat.
The mother also said she was in a good mood when she was taken away by her son, but as they were leaving the house she heard screaming coming from inside the house and then the defendant met her in the car outside.
The police informed the mother and son that they called the police to register a complaint against the accused as this was not the first time he had done this.
But the defendant explained to police that he became upset when his mother refused to take money from a couple in the village who were helping his brother with his taxes.
Gavin has been charged with two offences, including:
Count 1: Domestic Violence or Family Violence (DV) – a Class “C” misdemeanor punishable by up to fifteen (15) years in prison, or a fine of $150 to $300; or both.
Count 2: Damage to Property – a Class “A” misdemeanor punishable by one (1) year in prison or a $1,000 fine; or both.
The defendant will be released on $1,000 bail pending trial.
