This is the first medal in the men’s individual speed climbing event after the speed climbing event was integrated into a combination of speed, bouldering and difficulty at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
“I’m very proud, very proud. The excitement is palpable,” Kristoforus Bagaskoro, a 41-year-old creative manager in the capital, Jakarta, told AFP.
“We should promote this sport further and help it grow further.”
The Southeast Asian island nation has emerged as an unexpected powerhouse in speed climbing, breaking records and winning multiple medals at top international events.
Vidrick leads the movement and his father said his son’s passion for the exciting sport started when he joined a student nature lovers group that included rock climbing as an activity.
“He really loved the sport. It was always his dream,” his father, Sumaryanto, who like many Indonesians goes by just one name, told Kompas TV.
Vidrik’s coach broke down in tears after the victory, and Indonesian Sport Climbing Federation president Yeni Wahid said she was “so moved she cried.”
Others wished Indonesia more climbing success and enjoyed Vidrick’s enthusiastic celebration in Paris.
“He kept kissing his medal and had a constant smile on his face. He looked like a huge burden had been lifted off his shoulders,” Annisa Balqis, 30, an Indonesian, wrote on X.
“Hopefully after this, he’ll be even more enthusiastic about winning.”
