Members of the North Korean Olympic team have not received smartphones from one of the Games’ sponsors that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Thursday would have been given free to all athletes at the 2024 Paris Games.

South Korean electronics company Samsung, a major IOC sponsor, is providing smartphones to all 10,500 competitors, which they can keep when they return home.

An IOC spokesman said: “We can confirm that no athletes from the North Korean National Olympic Committee received the phones.”

Earlier on Thursday, the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs drew attention to the UN sanctions imposed on North Korea in 2006 over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. These measures have been strengthened several times over the years and also apply to the country’s citizens.

North Korea sent 14 representatives to compete in seven sports at this summer’s Olympics in the French capital.
